Black History Month at the Library

One of the most under represented stories in the history of America at war is the enormous contributions of African Americans. Dating back to the American Revolution African Americans have played significant roles in every conflict and declared war in our nation's history. Their often unsung efforts have only just started coming to light years after their service had ended and memories of wars they fought fade from the public's memory.

Featured programming for the month includes a presentation by Earl Ijames, an archivist with the North Carolina Division of Archives and History who will present his view of the role of African Americans during the Civil War. Mr. Ijames program includes a screening of the film "Colored Confederates." Monday, February 12th, Central Library Auditorium @ 6 pm

Other featured programs of note include "The Spirit of Harriet Tubman," a one woman play by Diane Faison on the life of abolitionist, spy and Underground Railroad worker Harriet Tubman. Ms. Faison's 50 minute performance has been described as breathtaking, riveting and inspiring. Saturday, February 17th Central Library Auditorium @ 2 pm.

Patricia Alston Harris will speak on her experience as the first female veteran to serve as State Commander of the American Legion in North Carolina, the largest war time veteran service organization in the world. Ms Harris is a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, among the most prestigious awards given by the state of North Carolina and was recently appointed as commissioner to North Carolina Military Affairs Commission by Governor Roy Cooper. Monday, February 12th @ 4:30 pm, Central Library Auditorium.

We invite you to join us for an evening with children's book author Kelly Starling Lyon who will read her book Tea Cakes for Tosh and discuss her experiences as a children's author. Tuesday, February 6th, Carver School Road Branch Library 4 pm to 5 pm. Tuesday, February 6th, Rural Hall Branch Library 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

Join us for these featured programs and our full list of other Black History Month programs coming to the Library in February.
