Portraits: a photography exhibit at Central Library on display until July 27.

Forsyth County Public Library received a three-year LSTA project grant to develop library programs and services to better serve people experiencing homelessness in the Library, most notably at the Central Library. The grant covered the hiring of a Peer Support Specialist to interact one-on-one with people experiencing homelessness or those at-risk for homelessness. This was a temporary position which was later made permanent by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. The grant covered sensitivity training for staff, development of life-skills, technology and recreational programs of interest and benefit to the homeless population. As a documentation of the grant, this exhibit of photographic portraits was commissioned.

Local photographer Diana Greene spent time with each of the individuals represented in this exhibit, in order to get a sense of their unique personalities and experiences. During this time the portrait subjects shared some of their experiences with Diana. These narratives are exhibited alongside each portrait.

Diana Greene is a multimedia artist based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her photographs straddle the world of fine art and documentary. She believes the camera is a way to connect more vividly with her community and her inner landscape. Her award-winning photographs have been exhibited widely, most recently in Barcelona, Spain. For 15 years, she’s worked as an artist in the schools, teaching hundreds of local public school students the power of imagination to create meaning in a complex world using words, photographs and video.
