Mother's Day Contest Winner

To celebrate Mother's Day last month, we asked our patrons at the Clemmons Branch Library to submit essays telling us why their mothers are special to them. Here is the winning essay by Miss Poppy T.:

"My mother, born in a rural village in India in 1962, was the only girl in her family of four brothers. At age 14, she went to boarding school in the city where she lived alone until she was married at 22. While the events of my mother's life - moving to a new country at 25, having two daughters with medical illnesses, and having lived alone for so many years as a teen - may have brought her down, she remains one of the most bubbly, optimistic, and selfless people I know. My mother has taught me so much through her own actions, speaking up for herself and for others, as a tutor and aid for special needs children, loving her children endlessly after countless trips to the emergency room, IV infusions, and calls to the doctors, and always bringing a smile to everyone she interacts with. She is the type of woman to go out of her way to help a stranger or strike up a conversation with the cashier at the store. There is no specific thing that I could say my mother does for me because she does it ALL. The list would go on forever. My mom is my light and my wind that always knows which way to direct me in times of confusion."

Congratulations, Poppy! You win this bouquet of flowers! Hope your mom likes them!
