Dr. Nathaniel Mackey to Headline On the Same Poem on April 28th

Forsyth County Public Library celebrates National Poetry Month with our annual On the Same Poem Luncheon and Teen Ink Poetry contest on Friday, April 28th at noon at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem. This year, our celebrated guest is acclaimed poet, novelist, DJ and jazz aficionado Dr. Nathaniel Mackey, Reynolds Price Professor of Creative Writing at Duke University.

Dr. Mackey's work has been praised by critics as a brilliant renewal of, and experiment with, the language of our spiritual condition. A native of Miami and raised in Southern California, Dr. Mackey earned a BA degree from Princeton University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

He has said that poets William Carlos Williams and Amiri Baraka were early influences on his work while jazz musicians John Coltrane and Don Cherry led him into an exploration of how language can be infused and informed by music. In a 2006 interview with MetroActive magazine, Mackey draws the parallels between music and his poetry. "I try to cultivate the music of language, which is not just sounds. It's also nuance. It's also a kind of angular suggestion."

Join us for On the Same Poem Luncheon, Friday, April 28th at noon at Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts located at 209 Spruce Street in Winston-Salem. Over a brown bag lunch that participants will bring you'll have an opportunity to hear Dr. Mackey read, meet him and discuss one of his poems selected especially for the occasion.

This event is free but space is limited and registration is recommended. To register call 336 703-2941 or 336 703-3041 or email On the Same Poem registration.
