Morning Tea Book Club at Walkertown Thursday, August 10 at 11 am

Join the Walkertown Library Morning Tea Book Club as we sip tea and discuss this month's two non-fiction book selections. Both books are available at the circulation desk for check out. Read one or both!

The first selection is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, published in 2010. This critically-acclaimed book explores the life, death, and lasting legacy of Henrietta Lacks, a poor African American woman from Halifax County, Virginia. In 1951, Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer that led to her death the same year. While she was still alive, cancer cells (now known as HeLa cells) were taken without her consent or knowledge. HeLa cells continue to be used by medical researchers today. Skloot expands her focus to also examine the science behind Lacks' immortal cell line as well as broader bio-medical ethical issues and how racism and class played a role in Lacks' treatment. This is a captivating book that even non-scientists won't be able to put down.

The second selection is My Life in France, Julia Child's autobiography that was posthumously published in 2006. Child, who became known as a preeminent expert in French cuisine, wasn't always a wildly successful chef. In fact, she didn't even learn how to cook until after she married in her mid-30s! Child leads the reader on a delicious journey from her first class at the École du Cordon Bleu in Paris, to co-writing Mastering the Art of French Cooking and then creating her first televised cooking show. My Life in France is a love story to the things Child cared about the most: France, food, and her beloved husband, Paul. Replete with personal photographs taken by Paul Child, this memoir will inspire even the most cooking-phobic readers to try their hand at soufflé!

Tea and light refreshments will be served.

All are welcome to join us for a friendly and interesting discussion.

The Morning Tea Book Club will meet on Thursday, August 10 at 11 am
at the Walkertown Branch Library, in the Auditorium.
