Myron Brown: Free Piano Concert February 29 at Walkertown

Every four years, we get an extra day on the calendar. We hope you will “leap” over to the Walkertown Branch Library and enjoy a free afternoon concert. Pianist Myron D. Brown will perform music by Chopin, Liszt, and Kapustin. Saturday, February 29, 2 p.m. at the Walkertown Branch Library.

Myron D. Brown, DMA, is the Associate Professor of Music at Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Brown earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, and he joined the music faculty of Winston-Salem State University in the fall of 2010.

Dr. Myron D. Brown, pianist

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Myron D. Brown developed a love for performing at an early age. He began studying piano with the late Mrs. Patricia Ard Williams, who presented him in his first full, public recital at age eleven. Since then, he has had the privilege to play for such notable people as actress Lynda Carter (“Wonder Woman”), television hostess Kathie Lee Gifford, and two former Miss Americas, Heather Whitestone and Phyllis George.

Some of Dr. Brown’s accolades include being the first place winner of the Alys Stephens Piano Competition at Birmingham-Southern College for three consecutive years, from 2002 to 2004. He was also a three-time winner of the Frances & Dorsey Whittington Concerto/Aria Competition at Birmingham-Southern College from 2001 to 2003. In 2004, He received the Trotter Award for “Most Outstanding Performance” from the Alabama Music Teachers’ Association and the Theodore Presser Scholarship from the Presser Music Foundation. He has performed three times as a soloist with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra of Birmingham, Alabama.

In June 2008, Dr. Brown performed in “A Celebration of Black Music 2008,” held at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. That same year, he was selected as the winner of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s “Piano Idol” competition. Shortly afterward, he made his debut as a soloist with the late Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Dr. Brown has also been a guest artist on the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Classical Roots and Young People’s concert series. Dr. Brown performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony in January 2012. In October 2013, he presented solo and chamber recitals as part of the inaugural Colour of Music Festival, in Charleston, South Carolina. In November 2013, he was again featured as a soloist, performing with the Winston-Salem Symphony.

In addition to the classical art form, Dr. Brown also has a passion for gospel music. He has been actively involved in the music ministry of several churches throughout his life, and has had the opportunity to share the stage with gospel recording artists such as Tramaine Hawkins, BeBe & CeCe Winans, and Crystal Aikin, the first-season winner of BET’s “Sunday Best.”

Dr. Brown was a recipient of the Sarah & Robert Flemister Scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College, where he studied piano with William DeVan. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Houston's Moores School of Music, under the instruction of Ruth Tomfohrde. He earned the of Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied with both Elisabeth and Eugene Pridonoff. Dr.

Brown joined the music faculty of Winston-Salem State University in the fall of 2010.
