Services Spotlight: Children's Outreach

The Children's Outreach Department provides services and materials to children who would be unlikely to utilize traditional library facilities and services. The department provides story time programs and materials for children in preschool settings and varied literature based programs and activities that encourage literacy for children in school and institutional settings.

Children’s Outreach also operates two youth mini libraries in Forsyth County for school age children. These libraries provide access to library materials that address homework needs, reading enjoyment and computer access. The libraries also provide programming that stimulate learning and encourage literacy.

The Department also operates the Smart Start bookmobile. The bookmobile visits select daycare and homecare centers in Forsyth county providing access to books and specially prepared story time kits to assist in sharing books with children. The bookmobile also visits select neighborhoods in Winston-Salem, providing books, materials as well as programs.

The Children’s Outreach staff also provides special programs to preschool, school and agencies that work with children birth to eighteen. These programs can include story time and storytelling sessions as well as activities that support literature and encourage literacy. Please call the department for more details.

The Children's Outreach department also provides “Effective Story time Training” for preschool educators.
