Lead Safe Work Practices

About three-quarters of houses and apartments built before 1978 contain lead-based paint, which is the leading cause of lead poisoning.

When properly managed and maintained, lead paint poses little risk. Chipping, peeling or cracking lead paint needs immediate attention. If you rent, talk to your landlord about fixing these surfaces.

Removing lead paint improperly can increase the danger to your family. Only a certified lead abatement contractor can remove lead safely, or you can learn by attending our class.

Disclosure Law

Are you planning to move or renovate soon? Federal law requires that individuals receive a pamphlet from the EPA called "Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home" before renting, buying or renovating houses or apartments built before 1978.

Renting
Landlords have to disclose known information on lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards before leases take effect. leases must include a disclosure form about lead-based paint.

Buying
Sellers have to disclose known information on lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards before selling a house. Sales and contracts must include a disclosure form about lead-based paint. Buyers have up to 10 days to check for lead hazards.

Renovating
Anyone you hire for renovation has to give you a pamphlet from the EPA called "Protect Your Family from Lead in Your Home".
