Goin' to Chicago, the 1994 documentary from George King, follows the stories of Great Migration immigrants from Greenville, Mississippi. They look back on their home state and the Jim Crow south they chose to leave, and reflect on their new lives in Chicago, both challenging and fulfilling. Their lives, and their new home town Chicago were profoundly changed forever. This engaging movie uses music, personal narrative, fascinating film footage and photography to develop intensely individual stories, and through those stories, teach history.

Our special guest is Dr. Elwanda Ingram, from the English Department at Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Ingram will lead the discussion of the movie.

Goin' to Chicago is a part of Forsyth County Public Library's On the Same Page community read project, and complements our book choice of Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. This is a perfect film for families and students, too.
