Introduction to Genealogy: Black History Month Edition

Presented by the North Carolina Room staff, this program is a beginner class for starting genealogy research on the internet. Learn how to begin the process of researching your family origins including tips on getting started, how to organize your research, and using different resources available through the Library website and the internet. The Black History Month Edition will look at the challenges faced by African American genealogists.

Conducting African American genealogy research is different from other ethnic backgrounds because of slavery. Slaves were considered property and therefore not allowed to attend school, read, write, legally marry, own land or businesses, join the military, or vote. All of these activities produce the records genealogists often use to document ancestry. In this program, you will learn about the different kinds of records and other information that will help you locate African American ancestors.
