Books We Like

I read a pretty wide variety of books. Lately I’ve been on a fairy tale kick of sorts - not the old standards (which I do love), but the novelization remakes that have recently been a trend in Young Adult fiction. I started off with the Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer. A science-fiction retelling of the Cinderella story, the first entry in the Lunar Chronicles series follows a cyborg mechanic named Cinder. Cinder’s cyborg status makes her a second-class citizen on Earth, but after a chance meeting with Prince Kai, she must risk everything to save him, and Earthen society from the Lunar society. Not only could I not put this one down, but I immediately flew through the follow up books in the series. I listened to Fairest on audio and can vouch that Meyer’s audio versions are excellent if you prefer that format.

Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell is the book I’ve most recently finished. Unhooked takes on the Peter Pan storyline. The protagonist is Gwendolyn Allister, a teen girl, moving to London with her unstable mother who claims to protect her from monsters. When she is grabbed by monsters and transported to another world, one called Neverland, Gwendolyn must figure out how closely this Neverland holds to the traditional story. Is the Captain friend or foe? Can Pan be trusted? I was kept on the edge of my seat for this selection. I was so taken by the series that I have just checked out a copy of the original Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. I look forward to revisiting the original, and maybe even some of the other recent versions of the work.

My creepiest selection will be my last. Through the Woods by Emily Carroll is a graphic novel. It’s hard to describe, but if you like your fairy tales on the dark and creepy side this is your choice. A few decades out of my teen years I was still creeped out by this one. The distinctive art style that drew me in kept me turning the pages until the end.
