Free Youth Programs in Summer at Walkertown Branch

From June 5 - July 31, Forsyth County Public Libraries will be hosting summer programming for all ages. Walkertown Branch Library is excited for our summer line-up of fun activities. All programs are designed for recommended ages, but we will welcome friends of all ages to the programs.

Please register each participant using our Google Form or by calling (336) 703-2990. This will help us track how many chairs and supplies we will need.

History Mystery Mondays

Follow the clues to the past at the Walkertown Branch Library this summer with fun movies and mysteries focused on history.

Movie Matinee: National Treasure

Monday, June 8 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

Beat the summer heat by settling in to watch a great family-friendly movie at Walkertown Branch Library.
Snacks are welcome, but not provided. Please avoid snacks with small pieces (like Nerds candy or popcorn) as these can be difficult to vacuum.

Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian and amateur cryptologist searches for a lost treasure that was accumulated into a huge stockpile and eventually hidden by American Freemasons during the American Revolutionary War. Whoever can steal the Declaration and decode it first will find the greatest treasure in history.
RATED PG for action violence and some scary images

Cacao: A King’s Delight

Monday, June 22 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids, ages 6 - 11)

If you think chocolate is the food of the gods, you’ve got nothing on the ancient Maya. Kids will hear myths about the Maya gods and chocolate, learn how cacao was cultivated and cooked, and decorate their own fancy chocolate cup.
Presented by the Museum of Anthropology.

Calendars with a Maya Twist

Monday, June 29 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for tweens and teens, ages 10 - 17)

The Maya made elaborate and accurate calendars to chart the movements of celestial bodies for both practical and sacred purposes. Teens can make a Maya calendar, then create their own calendar design.

Who's that Maya

Monday, July 20 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids, ages 6 - 11)

One aspect of the Maya culture in Mexico hundreds of years ago was making masks (of ceramic, stone, wood, obsidian, and even bone) for religious celebrations. Kids will use paper to craft their own celebration masks.

Cacao: A King’s Delight

(Fun for tweens and teens, ages 10 - 17)

Stories in the Sky

Every picture made of stars tells a story. Hear the ancient and modern stories that give constellations like the Big Dipper many names. You can even make up a story, or a constellation, for yourself.

The Planets, the Romans, the Legends

The king of the gods is a giant ball of gas. Find out what connects Roman mythology to the planets in our solar system, like Mercury, Venus, Mars and the giant king himself, Jupiter.

Saturday Crafterdays

Get crafty. We have the supplies, you have the ideas: make something fun that you get to keep.

Flower Frenzy

Saturday, June 20 at 12 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

Kids will be shown how to make paper flowers, as simple or as fancy as they want, using materials easily found at home. We will also have a coloring station set up with floral coloring sheets and crayons.

Unreal Art

Saturday, July 25 at 12 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

Designing trick art and optical illusions is easier than you think. We will create trick 3-D stairs while everyone will have a chance to use a coloring station set up with coloring sheets and crayons.

Animal Mythbusters

Friday, June 26 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

The zoo will bring some live animals (and not-so-live artifacts) to take on animal myths, from dangling opossums to nuclear cockroaches. Audience participation and questions are encouraged.
Presented by the North Carolina Zoo.

Dancing Stories

Wednesday, July 22 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

Traditional dances, stories, and songs give fun, inspiring glimpses into West African community-building basics. You may find yourself playing instruments and dancing by the end of the show.

Balloonstravaganza

Friday, July 31 at 3 p.m.

(Fun for kids of all ages)

Come marvel at all of the Balloon Lady’s amazing, balloon-twisting creations this summer at the library. Please leave all porcupines, cactuses and scissors at home. If you are a crab, please wear mittens.

Programs ideal to build a variety of skills in little ones aged 5 and under.

Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
