Mayali leaves her homeland to find her father and meets up with Joseph, a boy who is mute but has the power to speak to her through his mind. This Caribbean folklore-inspired cross-country fantasy filled with adventure follows the pair from fictional Zolpash through Guyana as they try to rescue Earth from evil oversized spiders and locate the missing father. Author Baksh is from Guyana.

The Chaos by Nalo Hopkinson

Toronto sixteen-year-old Scotch may have to acknowledge her own limitations and come to terms with her mixed Jamaican, white, and black heritage if she is to stop the Chaos that has claimed her brother and brought madness to much of the world. Author Hopkinson was born in Jamaica.

A fierce and subtle poison by Samantha Mabry

Spending the summer with his hotel-developer father in Puerto Rico, seventeen-year-old Lucas learns the local legends of a cursed girl filled with poison. Unfortunately, his girlfriend mysteriously disappears, and he is the prime suspect. Author Zoboi was born in Haiti.
