Do you like to escape when you read? Do you like to think about how you might change the world if only you had supernatural powers? Current news around the world has many of us in a state of uncertainty at this time, so I like to escape the current state of affairs and also daydream about having superpowers when I read. “The Fever King” & “The Electric Heir” by Victoria Lee take place in the former United States, mostly in the nation of Carolinia. Noam Alvaro is the son of undocumented immigrants who have spent their lives fighting for the rights of refugees. He is also the only survivor of a viral magic outbreak that recently killed his entire family. Noam now finds that he is has the special ability to control technology which attracts the attention of the Minister of Defense who offers to teach Noam about his new powers. Noam accepts the offer with plans to eventually use his power to help overthrow the increasingly corrupt government. Noam must decide how far he is willing to go to achieve his perception of justice. These are exciting novels with many twists and turns and plenty of superpowers to satisfy the superhero in us all. The “Maximum Ride” series by James Patterson is one of my all-time favorite series! Books in this series include “The Angel Experiment,” “School’s Out—Forever," “Saving the World,” “The Final Warning,” “Max,” “Fang,” “Angel,” “Nevermore,” and “Maximum Ride Forever.” These books follow the stories of Maximum Ride, aka Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel who have the extraordinary ability of being able to fly. These kids are the result of multiple lab experiments performed by doctors trying to answer the question, “what if...?” Avian DNA (among other things) has been inserted into their genomes, and as a result these kids have wings and also exhibit other special abilities. This series explores the heights and depths of science, human nature, evil, compassion, and much, much more. Max is a strong female leader who ALWAYS protects her flock. A movie titled "Maximum Ride" debuted in 2016 based on this book series. You may also enjoy two other titles by James Patterson that are not a part of this series, but have similar themes: “When the Wind Blows” and “The Lake House.” All of these titles are page-turners from beginning to end, with many surprises in each one that will delight the reader all the way through. The “Witcher Saga” by Andrzej Sapkowski will satisfy fantasy readers with a plethora of monsters, elves, dwarves, gnomes, humans, grueling battles, medieval warfare, sorcery, intrigue, romance and a strong story plot. Titles in this saga include “The Last Wish,” “Sword of Destiny,” “Blood of Elves,” “Time of Contempt” “Baptism of Fire,” “The Tower of the Swallow,” “The Lady of the Lake” and “Season of Storms.” This saga recounts the stories of the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, and his young charge Cirilla, aka Ciri, who are linked by destiny. Witchers are monster hunters that have supernatural powers to conquer their various beastly adversaries. A Witcher’s fighting abilities are seemingly unrivaled. Ciri is the lost princess of the conquered kingdom of Cintra who is sent to train to become a Witcher in order to protect her from various international political plots that threaten her very existence. These books are fabulous if you are a lover of fantasy writing and are sure to thrill. This saga has also been made into a Netflix TV series. Season one of the TV series is now available with season two expected in 2021.
