Take a journey through time with our African American Music Appreciation Month Series

African American Music Appreciation: Standing on the Shoulders of Legends
Forsyth County Central Library Auditorium, Tuesdays, June 4, 11, and 18 from 5-6:30 p.m.

June is African American Music Appreciation Month! Created by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, this month celebrates the African American musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation’s treasured cultural heritage. In 2024, Forsyth County Central Public Library will be celebrating and embracing that impact.

June 4 we will be exploring the foundations of African American music and then enjoying what is so lovingly called the Golden Oldies. We will be covering soul music, disco, and funk as they relate to the African American community and continue to affect the culture in the present musical scene.

June 11 we're going to slide into the iconic music of the 1990s. We are really going to dive deep into an amazing era of music with a focus on the Girl Bands, the Boy Bands, and the Divas that really made up the soundtrack of that time. The 90s weren't that long ago, so join us as we travel down musical memory lane.

June 25 we're giving the current Reggae, Reggaeton and AfroBeats scenes their due as today's artists stand on the shoulders of the legends who came before. We'll look where we are today and gaze into future to ponder how African American music will influence tomorrow's artists.

We hope that you will join us, and if there are any questions at all, feel free to email Tony McCloud.

All Forsyth County Public Library programs are free and open to the public.
