Free Summer Reading Programs for Kids and Teens at Walkertown Branch

Toddlers and caregivers can read together during Storytime or move and groove during Music and Movement. Teens can learn about space, science, and space science with our Space Exploration and STEAM Exploration programs. Kids, teens, and young at heart can also have fun with the Balloon Lady!

Exciting events happening this July at Walkertown Branch Library.

Monday, July 15 at 3 p.m. — Family Movie Matinee: “LEGO Movie” (ALL AGES)
Monday and Friday in the third week of July, Walkertown Branch Library will show the first and second movies in a popular kids series. Come to one or both movies for free!
Emmet, an ordinary LEGO figurine who always follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special— an extraordinary being and the key to saving the world. (PG, 1hr 40min)

Wednesday, July 17 at 3 p.m. — Science (AGES 10 - 17)
To inspire kids and teens to explore their world and build skills to expand their horizons, Walkertown Branch Library will be hosting exciting STEAM programs this summer.
Tweens and teens can explore the “S” in STEAM (Science) by creating slime. We will learn how to read recipes, measure and mix, and experiment with trial and error while making ooey gooey slime to take home and enjoy. All materials will be provided.

Friday, July 19 at 3 p.m. — Family Movie Matinee: “LEGO Movie 2” (ALL AGES)

The citizens of Bricksburg face a dangerous new threat when LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space start to wreck everything in their path. (PG, 1hr 47min)

Monday, July 22 at 3 p.m. — Technology (AGES 6 - 11)
To inspire kids and teens to explore their world and build skills to expand their horizons, Walkertown Branch Library will be hosting exciting STEAM programs this summer.
Kids 6-11 can explore the “T” in STEAM (Technology) by learning the basics of coding with Ozobots. Learn how to operate Ozobot, how Ozobot senses its environment and moves in it, and how to tell Ozobot what to do using Color Codes. All materials will be provided.

Wednesday, July 24 at 3 p.m. — The Epic Journey of Apollo 11 (AGES 10 - 17)
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, Walkertown Branch Library will be hosting NASA Solar System Ambassadors to bring a series of exciting programs this summer.
Although this presentation is geared for ages 10 - 17, ages 6 and up are more than welcome to attend. We will take a brief look at the contributions of Projects Mercury and Gemini that set the stage for Apollo, the program that would land humans on the Moon. Using models, we will discuss the liftoff, the voyage, the landing, and the astronauts' visit to the lunar surface. Presented by Mike Lucas.

Friday, July 26 at 3 p.m. — Summer Reading Finale: Balloonstravaganza (ALL AGES)
Come and see everyone’s favorite balloon twister this summer at the library. Marvel at all of the amazing creations of Winston-Salem’s own Balloon Lady! Please leave all porcupines, cactuses, and scissors at home. Presented by the Balloon Lady. Click here for more information.

Tuesdays @ 10:30 a.m. — Storytime (BIRTH - AGE 5)
A fun-filled 30-minute program for kids 0-5 with stories, songs, and dancing. A new theme each week! Our storytime themes for this month are:
July 16 - People in Space
July 23 - Balloon Fun
July 30 - No Storytime

Thursdays @ 10:30 a.m. — Music & Movement (BIRTH - AGE 5)
Join a roomful of toddlers and preschoolers for lively fun, stretching, dancing, rocking, and rolling. Rhymes, chants, and song lyrics develop emerging literacy while everything we do develops rhythm skills. Social skills and relaxed exercise complete the fun.
