African Americans In The Civil War

In February, the Forsyth County Public Library celebrates Black History Month with a focus on the national theme, “African Americans and the Civil War.” During the war 179,000 African Americans served in the Union Army with over 39,000 being killed in action

Many African Americans played a significant role during the Civil War, which was considered a fight for freedom. Black History Month programs are intended to share information that will educate the community on contributions made by African Americans during the Civil War and to encourage ongoing discussion and research. Programming during the month will also present differing views on the role and impact of African Americans in the Civil War and to highlight the library’s role as a resource for information and a keeper of culture and heritage .

Black History Month programs will take place from January through March and will include special storytime programs for preschool children, nationally known storytellers, lectures and authors who will share programs during our celebration. All programs are free and open to the public.
