Staff Members of the Year 2011 - Sworn

SWORN

Deputy Jeffrey M. Boysel has been named Sworn Staff Member of the Year for a selfless act of courage where he put his life at risk to save the lives of others.

In the early hours of March 9th, 2011 Winston-Salem Police Officers responded to the area of northbound U S Highway 421 near Martin Luther King Dr. on a report that a pick-up truck was traveling southbound on 421 in the northbound lanes. At some point a Winston-Salem Police Officer caught up to the vehicle and described it as a red pick-up being operated by a white male with gray hair. The WSPD officer stated that the truck was traveling at approximately 70 miles per hour and flashing its headlights at oncoming traffic. WSPD officers were traveling southbound on 421 in the southbound lanes on the other side of the guardrail from the driver of the red truck. They observed and called in an accident with personal injury at 421 and Linville Rd that was caused by the actions of the driver of the red truck.

Deputy Boysel diverted from a call that he was enroute to in an attempt to get into a position to deploy his issued stop sticks to try and stop this dangerous driver from continuing down his path of destruction and prevent him from killing innocent motorists. The driver of the truck was able to get past Deputy Boysel’s location at S. Main St and northbound 421 in Kernersville before he could deploy his stop sticks and Deputy Boysel entered onto the highway along with two Kernersville Police Officers. Utilizing his blue lights and siren and at great danger to his own life gave warning to oncoming motorists of the oncoming danger. Deputy Boysel was able to get past the dangerous driver just after the Highway 66 interchange and pull in front of him, again risking his own life and putting himself in harm’s way in an attempt to stop this dangerous driver by being the lead vehicle in a rolling road block not knowing what actions the driver of the truck would take to avoid this maneuver.

Deputy Boysel’s selfless actions ultimately were responsible for stopping this driver, who was intoxicated and posed a serious threat to the public. Deputy Boysel’s act of courage saved countless lives in the process.
