I Didn't Know What I Didn't Know

Friday, September 5 at 2:00 pm in the Central Library Auditorium

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, please join us in the Central Library Auditorium to hear the story of Dorothy Hampton Marcus, one of the Piedmont’s unsung heroines.

As a young student at Meredith College, Dorothy became involved in a series of dialogues with students at historically black Shaw University. During her junior year, she worked as a counselor at an interracial camp for children in Rabbit Hollow, NH. That summer changed her life and inspired her to join the struggle for racial equality. This led her to meet her future husband, the late Rev. Chester Lee Marcus, a black man whom she dated in secret for nearly a decade. I Didn’t Know What I Didn’t Know: A Southern White Woman's Story About Race, co-written with her daughter Kathryn Marcus, tells all about the journey that took Dorothy throughout the United States to witness the Civil Rights Movement firsthand.

Kathryn will join us to share her mother's amazing story. Everyone is welcome to attend.
