Let's Get Digital

It’s day Eleventythirty of Marpril some year and you’re watching your "To-Be-Read" pile grow in one direction or another while safe at home. Of course reading is a personal fave but I’m sometimes compelled to do something different…or at least think about doing something different, maybe.

The huge comfort and joy of that could-be compulsion is that the library gives me the tools and the information I need to possibly pick up a hobby...or, you know, read about some of my options.

Let’s use this quarantine time to try something new. Incidentally, “researching” those things totally counts as doing them. If a whole book seems like too much of a commitment at the moment, your library card also gives you access to tons of magazines online through RBdigital.

Tell me now is not the perfect time to troubleshoot that blasted, confounded doo-dad thingamuhjig for yourself (or your parents). Can’t fix it? These are the resources you’ve been looking for.

Let’s do it. Let’s paint that accent chair, take down that awful wallpaper in the bathroom, start the garden that we always dreamed of. Today’s the day you declutter the home office, stain that old dresser that’s been taunting you from the corner. Now’s the time you make the front porch your own personal oasis. Also, making lists of to-do projects is totally an accomplishment itself.

Just because we can’t go in certain spaces doesn’t mean we can’t get out. Folks are going au naturale more now than ever. Maybe you’ll pick a trail to hike, research a camping weekend or plan your next vacation. Maybe you’ll just stare at the pages daydreaming...everybody got their something.

Pantry raid! We might all have to start getting a little creative with what we find hidden in the depths of our cabinets and freezers. Be adventurous and give a new recipe a shot. Get all “chefy” and improvise, exploring new flavor and texture combinations. Looking at the pictures and salivating is fine, too.

Breathe in, breathe out. Self-care is essential during a time when we might be feeling especially alone or isolated from the communities and routines that give us a sense of fellowship and motivation. Personally, I’m missing my group spin class, like majorly. Replicating the group dynamic and energy can be a challenge but maybe now is the time to make a space, a sacred place, for you. As you’re checking in on your friends and loved ones, remember to check up on yourselves and your own wellbeing also. Practice makes perfect(ly imperfect).

We hope you are, and stay, well. We miss you. We will rebuild, we have the technology. We have the Library.
