Creative Writing & Podcasting - with Local Author, Becky McLaughlin

Have you ever had a good idea for a story and were not sure how to begin the writing process? Did you think your story idea would make a great podcast? Then this program series is for you. Featuring local award-winning playwright, author, and podcaster, Becky McLaughlin, this three-part program series will provide insight into the creative writing and podcasting process.

The first program of the series will feature Becky in conversation with Jacquelyn White, Teen Services Librarian, about the creative writing process. This program will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. and will be live via Zoom. You can join this session by clicking here, or watch live on our Facebook page.

The second program of the series will focus on the planning, logistic, and technical aspects of creating a podcast. The program will feature Becky and Michael Ackerman, lead director of Becky's new scripted podcast, "The Witch in the Woods," in conversation with Jonathan Furr, Access Services Librarian. This program will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. and will be live via Zoom. You can join this session by clicking here, or watch live on our Facebook page.

The third and final program of the series will provide a glimpse at the finished product of the creative writing and podcasting process. Becky, Michael, and members of the core cast of "The Witch in the Woods" podcast will perform a live reading from one of the podcast episodes and answer any questions about the recording and podcasting process. A fully edited clip of one of the podcast episodes will also be played to give everyone a taste of the final product. Becky McLaughlin studied performance, stage management, and theatre management at both Virginia Commonwealth University and UNC-Greensboro. Her short play, "Stay for Dinner," was one of the six winners of the 2019 Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Festival and was published as part of that year's festival collection. Along with writing and producing her first original podcast, Becky is also querying a middle-grade fantasy novel as well as her first full-length play. "The Witch in the Woods" is a scripted, family-friendly horror podcast aimed at middle-grade/young adult audiences. The podcast follows four children as they seek out the witch in the woods on a dare. They befriend her and her familiars: a fastidious dog named Barnaby and a snarky cat named Grimalkin. To prove to their friends that they’ve visited the witch, Barnaby and Grimalkin tell them supernatural stories and spine-chilling tales.
