Introduction to Canning - Learn the Basics to the Art of Preserving Foods

You may be thinking, Canning, this time of year!?! Yes. This is a great time of the year to learn the art of canning. It is a year-around activity to preserve in-season fruits, vegetables, and meats. In the fall, there's a variety of foods that can be canned (no pun intended), such as apples, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, cabbage, tomatoes, game and the list goes on.

The art of canning has been around for centuries. It has been a safe method of preserving seasonal foods to enjoy throughout the year; however, it is slowly dying out because of easy access to canned foods and because many do not have the time. Many of our parents and grandparents whose canned foods we've enjoyed eating, are putting up their aprons and retiring their canners. This is the time to pass on the "canner" to the next generation to continue with home food preservation traditions. It is beneficial to learn the basics of canning if for any reason, down the line, you may need or want to preserve your own wholesome foods. This could be your new family fun-time tradition!

This workshop is designed for those who wish to learn about canning as a home food preservation method. This curriculum introduces canning methods and discusses best practices for safe and quality home canned products. This course will prepare you for boiling water and pressure canning instruction.
