Forsyth County News: January 2026

January's issue of Forsyth County News is out now!

In this month's edition:

  • Assistance Available for Heating Bills: The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) helps eligible households pay a portion of winter heating bills. Applications are currently open for residents 60+ and disabled individuals. All other households can apply starting Jan. 2 at the Department of Social Services or online.
  • COVID Shots for Underinsured: Forsyth County Department of Public Health, 799 Highland Ave, has COVID shots for residents who are underinsured or whose plans don’t cover the COVID vaccine. Flu shots are also available.
  • County Commissioner Update: The January 2026 meeting schedule has been announced, including monthly evening meetings and regular briefings. Commissioners also thanked volunteer board and committee members.
  • Free Test Radon Kits Available: In recognition of Radon Action Month, free radon test kits can be ordered through the NC Radon Program. They can also be purchased from the county’s Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection.
  • Virtual Listening Session on Behavioral Health: Behavioral Health Services is hosting a virtual session on Jan. 14 to gather community input on mental health and developmental disability services. Registration and feedback options are available online.
  • Fire & EMS Recognize Employees: Fire and Emergency Medical Services divisions held awards recognizing outstanding employee service and rescue efforts.
  • New Fire Commission Begins: The new Forsyth County Fire Commission held its first meeting to study and improve county fire and rescue services.
  • Juvenile Crime Prevention Grants: The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council issued a request for proposals for programs serving at-risk youth in FY 2026–27. A virtual information session is planned on Jan. 7.
  • Other highlights include Year-End Remarks from the commissioners, commissioners and county managers participated in holiday parades, and a community donor-supported $5 pet adoption fees at the Animal Shelter helped facilitate more adoptions last month.
