Belle da Costa Greene, the protagonist of "The Personal Librarian," this year's community read, was one of countless African Americans who chose to live as white. Hobbs is the author of "A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life." She serves as the director of African American studies at Stanford University and is a contributing writer for "The New Yorker."
