Library Circulation Policy Update

The Circulation Policy of the Forsyth County Public Library is changing as of February 1, 2011. Changes in the policy will affect any Library customer with overdue fines and/or materials that are over 45 days overdue. The bill threshold has been lowered to $0.00. This means that any bill amount on a customer record will block checkout of materials and use of public computers. The Library is making this policy change in an effort to recover overdue materials and get them back into circulation so that materials are accessible to all Library customers.

When Library materials are overdue for prolonged periods of time, they are not available for checkout. After you have borrowed an item for its lending period—most often 21 days—it becomes overdue. A bill is assessed when an item is 45 days overdue. Circulating books and other materials is what libraries do best, and we ask for your help in getting them back into circulation.

The following changes go into effect on February 1, 2011:

  • Any bill amount will BLOCK check out of materials and use of public computers
  • First replacement library cards cost $1 and additional cards cost $5
  • Maximum DVD/VHS fines will increase to $20

During January and through February, the library is sponsoring two programs to help you eliminate any money owed to the Library:

  • Food for Bills: For every non-perishable food item you bring to a library location we will forgive a dollar in fines or fees from your account. All collected food items will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank to help in the fight against hunger in our community.
  • Item for an Item: The Library has a standing policy of accepting a like item for a lost item. You can donate any new or gently used book or AV item (of equal or greater value) to replace lost materials on a library account.

Please discuss any bills on your account, or other circulation issues, with Library staff at your local branch. We apologize for any inconvenience this policy change may cause. We appreciate every customer’s help in keeping library materials in active circulation.
