The Quality Aging Conference, hosted by Forsyth County Government, is intended to provide information to seniors and caregivers to maintain older adults' independence as they age. This free event will include workshop sessions, a hot lunch, snacks, vendors and demonstrations of products and services.

Conference Session Topics/Summaries
("GS" indicates a General Session for all Participants)

8:15 AM - Doors Open

9:00 AM - "Promoting Brain Health" (GS)

A discussion of factors that impact brain health, such as sleep habits. Participants will also learn about Alzheimer's disease, including risk factors, warning signs and the diagnosis process.

10:30 AM - Workshop Session #1 (Choice of one of the options below)

  • Option A - "What's New in Medicare for 2024? The basics of how Medicare works will be covered including important information on the changes in Medicare for 2024. Attendees will learn about key changes before Medicare Annual Open Enrollment which begins October 15, 2023.
  • Option B - "Nutrition and Dental Health for Older Adults" Participants will learn what constitutes a healthy diet and proper dental care to prevent serious health issues in older adults.
  • Option C - "Empowering Older Adults with Help from DSS Adult Services" Learn how Adult Services programs offered by the Forsyth County Department of Social Services can help participants thrive in the setting of their choice with the level of support each needs to live their best life.

11:25 AM - Workshop Session #2 (Choice of one of the options below)

  • Option A - "Planning for the Future: Advanced Directives" We don't know what the future holds. But planning ahead can help remove some of the uncertainty. Participants will learn how advanced directives can ensure that their wishes are known when they are unable to make or communicate those decisions due to cognitive decline.
  • Option B - "Aging Safely and Local Resources to Help You Do So" Safety issues facing older adults such as environmental hazards, fire risks, and health problems will be discussed. Participants will learn how to prevent personal injury and discover community resources available to help.
  • Option C - "What Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina Means for Older Adults" Participants will receive an overview of the upcoming changes regarding Medicaid in NC. There will also be an emphasis upon dual-eligibility (Medicare/Medicaid).

12:15 PM - "In this Scary World, the SOS is Here to Help" (GS during Lunch)

As a small but highly effective law enforcement agency, the Secretary of State's Office has the unique responsibility of protecting the state's citizens from fraud and scams involving investment securities and the people who sell or advise about securities; charities and charitable solicitors; counterfeit prescription medicines and products; and notaries public. Will include discussion of these duties and provide tips on how citizens may protect themselves from those who seek to scam them.

1:30 PM - Workshop Session #3 (Choice of one of the options below)

  • Option A - Practicing Emotional Wellness Discusses social isolation, depresssion, health challenges and other issues affecting the well-being of older adults and offers several strategies for managing your mood and perspective. Includes interactive activities as well as take-home worksheets and a list of local resources for help.
  • Option B - Community Resources: When and How to Access Information A discussion of the top needs of older adults and caregivers in Forsyth County intended to help identify the resources available in the community to meet those needs. An overview of the Help Line will be provided including how to access this valuable resource.
  • Option C - What's New in Medicare for 2024? The basics of how Medicare works will be covered including important information on the changes in Medicare for 2024. Attendees will learn about key changes before Medicare Annual Open Enrollment which begins October 15, 2023.

2:25 PM - "The Essentials of Self Care As We Age" (GS)

Participants will learn how to care for themselves using simple and practical techniques for everyone.
