Livestock Judging Team Wins Awards

The Forsyth/Stokes County Livestock Judging Team recently competed in the 2013 NC State Livestock Judging and Skillathon Contests on November 2 and 3 in Raleigh, NC and brought home numerous honors.

Youth develop analytical and public speaking skills during these contests, which benefit them throughout their entire life. The Junior Livestock Judging Team included: Lynae Bowman, Hannah King, Josie Stanberry, and Emma Stanberry. The Junior Team won the following awards in the Livestock Judging Contest: Lynae Bowman was second place individual overall, first in meat goats, and first in swine. Hannah King was seventh place overall, fourth in reasons, and second in swine. Josie Stanberry was fourth in meat goats. The Junior Team was the second place team overall, second in reasons, first in meat goats, first in swine, second in sheep, and third in cattle. Kate Hice competed as a senior during the Livestock Judging Contest and was the fourth place overall individual, first in swine, and fourth in meat goats.

During the Skillathon Contest youth are tested on their knowledge of the beef, swine, goat, and sheep industries. As a senior in the contest, Kate Hice was the fifth place overall individual. As juniors in the contest, Hannah King was third place overall and Lynae Bowman was the tenth place overall individual.

The team members’ next Livestock Judging Contest will be held in January. The Livestock Judging Team coaches are April Bowman, Forsyth County 4-H Extension Agent, and Chris Jeffcoat, Forsyth and Stokes County Area Agent for Livestock.
