Plans Review Requirements
Commercial / Multi-Family / Industrial Building Projects
For all Commercial/Multi-Family/Industrial building projects not in the city limits
of Winston-Salem or Kernersville (excluding WS/FC Schools) the City/County Inspections
will forward a set of building plans to the Forsyth County Fire Department for review.
The Forsyth County Fire Department will contact the person indicated on the plans
as the contact to discuss fire code requirements. A letter will also be sent to
the contact person after phone contact. A building permit will not be signed off,
by this office, if further information or a resubmittal of plans is required.
Fire Protection and Storage Tank Systems
The following links detail the plan review submittal requirements to the Forsyth
County Fire Department for various types of fire protection or storage tank systems.
Submittals should be made to the Forsyth County Fire Department.
Upon approval of the plans, a permit will be issued for the installation of the
particular system. When requesting a final inspection from the Forsyth County Fire
Department, you must submit the Statement of Compliance prior to any inspection
being scheduled. If there are multiple fire protection systems being installed at
the same location, the final inspection may be held until all trades have completed
their installations so that this office may conduct one inspection.
Please contact the Forsyth County Fire Prevention Office at (336) 703-2550 to request
an inspection or if you should have any questions regarding these requirements.
Statement of Compliance
Section 901.2.1 of the North Carolina State Fire Prevention Code states the following:
“Before requesting final approval of the installation, where required by the
Code Official, the installing contractor shall furnish a written statement to the
Code Official that the subject fire protection system has been installed in accordance
with approved plans and has been tested in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications
and the appropriate installation standard. Any deviation from the design standards
shall be noted and copies of the approvals for such deviations shall be attached
to the written statement.”
The above reference Statement of Compliance shall be furnished to the Forsyth County
Fire Department upon request for a final inspection of any fire protection system
installation. This Statement of Compliance shall be on the installing companies’
letterhead with the project name and address clearly indicated along with the type
of fire protection system installed. The installer shall print their name and sign
their name to this Statement of compliance.
Additional certifications or information may be required at the final inspection,
such as aboveground and belowground test certificates for sprinkler and standpipe
systems and record of completion forms for fire alarm systems.
