Synopsis and Discussion

The statewide open burning ban issued by the NC Forest Service remains in effect until further notice. Ozone concentrations are in the mid to upper Code Yellow range today and particle pollution concentrations are in the lower Code Yellow range. One more day of particularly elevated ozone readings is on tap to round out the workweek with concentrations likely pushing to near the Code Yellow/Orange threshold. Diffuse smoke will continue to stream into the Triad from wildfires across the Southeast, promoting Code Yellow particle pollution concentrations and acting as a catalyst for the enhanced ozone production that is anticipated. The densest slug of smoke looks to arrive on Friday night and Saturday morning but the worst of it looks to stay to the southeast of the Triad at this time. Still, even on the outer fringes, daily fine particle averages are expected to net out in the mid Code Yellow range. Weak low pressure will move off the Mid Atlantic coast by Sunday, pushing a boundary through our area in backdoor fashion and turning our surface winds out of the northeast. Code Green AQI readings are expected, however, since this will not be a particularly definitive change of air mass the potential exists for low Code Yellow particle pollution levels to persist.
